The ecosystem is short-form for ecological system. An ecosystem is a community of plants, coral reefs, animals and smaller organisms that live, feed, reproduce and interact in the same area or environment.
Various species of plants, coral reefs, animals and smaller organisms have a web of connections with each other and their environment. This connection – within and between ecosystems form the “web of life”. When an ecosystem is healthy, there is a balance between the inhabitants and the resources available to them. The balance between inhabitants and resources ensure their survival. When we, as humans, disturb or remove one part of that balanced ecosystem, it could affect the functioning of other parts of the ecosystem. Eventually, one or more species may become endangered or extinct thus leading to the decline of the Eco system.
The human population globally is increasing, thus creating more demand for land. As a result, humans are moving towards forests with the view of expansion and satisfying their needs thus destroying habitats at an alarming rate, threatening our own survival in the longer term. This can be effectively dealt with conservation efforts. Conservation effort is the careful management of a natural resource or a species to prevent exploitation, destruction and extinction. Conservationists protect an endangered area by limiting or defining use of an area by people, or by working with people who depend on these vulnerable areas for their livelihood and teaching them about sustainable practice and Eco tourism.
What is sustainable What is sustainable development? As per the Brundtland Report,”Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Sustainability is all about,Around the world, two thirds of the energy consumed, 60 percent of the water consumption and 70 percent of greenhouse gases can be attributed to cities. Urbanization, climate change and demographic change are forcing cities to make their infrastructures more efficient. With innovative technologies, cities can become more environmentally friendly, increase the quality of life for their residents, and cut costs – all at the same time. Better sustainability means…
The concentration of CO2 (can you shift the 2 dwon as per the formula?) in our atmosphere is measured in “parts per million” which simply means a ratio of CO2 molecules per million molecules in our atmosphere. There are three numbers we need to understand global warming – 275, 391, and 350. About 300 years ago our atmosphere contained 275 PPM of CO2, now; this is a useful amount because without CO2 & other greenhouse gases our planet would be too cold for life. Currently, the planet has 391 PPM of CO2 and this number is rising by roughly 2% YOY. 350 PPM is the safety zone for our planet. Above it, we risk reaching dangerous tipping points that will lead to destruction of life here. We don’t know how long we can stay above 350 PPM but we do know that the smart thing is to get back in the safety zone ASAP.
